The Maine Floodplain Management Program does not administer grants, but there are many opportunities through federal and state agencies to get financial support for flood mitigation.
FEMA Grants
The Federal Emergency Management Agency provides financial assistance to states to develop and maintain a comprehensive, statewide hazard mitigation capability for implementing pre- and post-disaster mitigation. The Maine Emergency Management Agency administers the grant program and maintains an updated list of available grants.
Grant opportunities include:
- Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), which provides grants to States and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures after a major disaster declaration.
- Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA), which provides funding to assist States and communities in implementing measures to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk of flood damage to buildings, manufactured homes, and other structures insurable under the NFIP.
- Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program (PDM), which provides funds to states, territories, Indian tribal governments, communities, and universities for hazard mitigation planning and the implementation of mitigation projects prior to a disaster event.
Community Resilience Partnership grants
The Community Resilience Partnership (CRP) provides grants and technical assistance to communities in Maine to help them identify and address local priorities to become more resilient to climate effects such as extreme storms, flooding, rising sea levels, and threats to public health.
