Indian Peafowl
The exotic bird with a penchant for dramatics
Where Peafowl Come From
Indian peafowl aren’t found in the wild in Maine, this is the park’s only exotic species. They’re native to India, where they live in a variety of open forests and grasslands.
Fowl Facts
Peafowl are loud communicators, using a wide range of calls – some shared between males and females, others used by males to defend territory. While those flashy feathers help attract mates, they also catch the attention of predators. Fun fact: males are peacocks, females are peahens, and together they’re called peafowl.
Quick Facts
Average Size
Peafowl measure about 3 feet long with a wingspan of 4½-5 feet. During breeding season, males add a show-stopping train of tail feathers that can reach up to eight feet long.
What's on the Menu
Peafowl diets consist of termites, worms, snakes, and lizards, with occasional snacks of flower buds, grains, grass, and bamboo shoots.
The Look
Males sport a vibrant blue-green body and dramatic tail feathers used for courtship displays. Females, called peahens, have mottled brown plumage with subtle green tones and much shorter tails.
