Eastern Musk Turtle

The tank with stank

Where They Hang Out

Found in slow-moving or still waters across southern and central Maine. Think ponds, marshes, and quiet streams with soft, muddy bottoms.

Tiny but Tough

When threatened, musk turtles can release a strong, musky odor – hence the nickname “stinkpot.” They’re not aggressive, just well-equipped with a built-in “leave me alone” button.
